Stories of Impact

  • Women's Empowerment Center

When Elena* and her young daughter arrived at a local domestic abuse shelter, they were safe—but starting over felt overwhelming. Elena had just begun a new job, and her daughter was adjusting to her third new school in less than a year. With no clear plan for transportation, Elena was ready to quit her job just to make sure her daughter got to and from school safely. That’s when she connected with the Women’s Empowerment Center. Together, we created a transportation plan, helped Elena access work-appropriate clothing from the Career Closet, and made a follow-up list for her daughter’s school social worker— including options for counseling support. When they left, Elena still had challenges to face—but she had a plan and felt less overwhelmed and more capable. This is the power of connection, support, and showing up for women and families exactly where they are.

  • TechGYRLS®

Last summer, I participated in the YWCA’s TechGYRLS® program. What I liked most was making new friends and getting to explore the S.T.E.A.M. field—science, technology, engineering, arts, and math. I learned about so many different careers and started to understand how jobs in our community make a big impact, even if they don’t seem exciting at first. TechGYRLS® really opened my mind to new possibilities for the future. It showed me that girls can make a difference in the world, no matter how old they are, and that everyone has the power to help shape what’s next.

I’m excited to join TechGYRLS® again next summer, make more friends, and keep learning about the importance of women leaders in our community.

  • Salud Para Todos

I’ve been a part of Salud Para Todos since it started, and it’s truly changed my life. It’s given me the chance to focus on self-care— something I now see as essential, not selfish. Taking Zumba with Ami, who feels more like family than an instructor, has brought me happiness and a sense of community. I’ve invited friends to join, and it now feels like a big party where we all lift each other up.

These classes have been a source of happiness, connection, and strength— an important part of what makes YWCA so impactful.
