Men and women both suffer a penalty for long term unemployment. However, women are more likely to take time off work and are more likely to take longer periods of time off – this can happen regardless of family/marital status as women are more likely to take on additional burdens of providing care to children, aging parents, and other family members.
•People who took a prolonged time off work to go back to school suffered an average of 5% wage loss due to their time away from work. That loss in wage on an average salary is about half of tuition at UWGB.
