Men and women both suffer a penalty for long term unemployment. However, women are more likely to take time off work and are more likely to take longer periods of time off – this can happen regardless of family/marital status as women are more likely to take on additional burdens of providing care to children, aging parents, and other family members.
•Women are more likely than men to experience prolonged unemployment due to relocating. This is often due to moving to a new city to accommodate the job move of their partner. Unemployment due to relocation resulted in an average of an 8% loss in wages.
•That loss in wage on an average salary is enough to otherwise afford the monthly payments on a new car.
