TechGYRLS®

YWtechgyrls

TechGYRLS®  is an after school program designed to nurture STEM areas (science, technology, engineering and math) in middle school girls.  The program, with a special focus on at-risk and low-income girls, is in its second year.  It now includes sixth, seventh and eighth grade girls at Washington Middle School and sixth grade girls at Franklin Middle School.  A TechGYRLS® Summer Camp is also held.

TechGYRLS® exposes middle school girls to science, technology and engineering at an early age.  A curriculum using mathematics, programming and graphic design encourages girls to explore and develop budding technical curiosity and envision a broad range of possibilities for their futures.  Hands-on, challenging projects in an environment of female peers help the girls develop technical tools, critical thinking and problem-solving skills, as well as leadership traits that can serve as the foundation for careers in STEM fields.  The program opens the door to future careers where women are vastly underrepresented and where technology interests and skills provide more lucrative opportunities.
